Four generations of the Gould family struggle through different but equally desperate iterations of this question as they seek freedom- artistically, financially and emotionally from the Brooklyn apartment that is the only sturdy contingent of their lineage. Flirtatious banter, piano sonatas, illness, compromise, permanent fractures and tense holiday meals gild the story of the Goulds as it unfolds across 78 years.
The story follows a non-linear, narrative led by an emotional, rather than temporal through-line. From Liam and Charlotte’s artistic careers and compromises, to the havoc Emily and Dianne’s childhood rivalry wreaks on their respective destinies, to Leo’s harrowing childhood through to the volatile romance of his young adulthood, connections are drawn from one generation to another in unexpected and critically revealing ways.
